  Children enjoy painting and it is a great activity for their development. When painting, children are able to experiment and express themselves. Painting helps children develop space awareness, recognize colours and learn about mixing colours. It helps their language and social development when they share their equipment and help clean up when they finish painting.  Physically it helps them develop their fine motor skills, eye- hand coordination and tripod grasp.

      Besides most of the above benefits, finger painting allows children to experiment with texture and hand / finger movements (cause and effect).

     Playing with play dough helps children develop fine motor skills when they manipulate the dough with their fingers.  They practice using their imagination and other cognitive abilities such as imitation, symbolism and problem solving.  Using play dough may help a child develop social skills as she plays along with other children with the dough. Additionally it may help a child when frustrated or angry.  Holding and squeezing the play dough can produce a calming effect on the child and is useful for teaching anger management skills.

      Children enjoy sand and water play so much while learning a wide range of skills beginning with fine motor skills when they lift containers filled with water or sand and eye-hand coordination when they pour water or sand from one container to another.  They also develop maths and science concepts as they learn about volume and discover what sinks and what floats.  They realize that the same amount of water may appear to be different when poured into different sized and shaped containers.  Children learn social skills from sand and water play as it requires cooperation and sharing. Sand and water play stimulate creativity.  Children can make shapes with sand moulds and patterns in the sand with their fingers or a plastic rake.  They can also trace letters and numbers in the sand which makes learning more fun.

      Role play is a very important part of healthy development. Playing make-believe strengthens language skills and aids in proper social development when a child interacts and responds to others. It also enables him to develop emotionally  when he can display a range of emotions within the play.  Role play also helps a child to develop his imagination and creativity, his sharing skills, self –confidence and a feeling of security.

    Construction toys create powerful, imaginative and creative play experiences.

     

  Children love to play with jigsaw puzzles.  They are a good exercise for visual discrimination and problem solving.
