June is almost here and summer is just around the corner.  This week we started a new topic: 'Summer'.  We talked about how important it is to keep away from the sun during peak hours and that we should always put on sunblock and wear a hat and sunglasses.  We should also drink plenty of water and eat fresh food; plenty of fruit and vegetables. 

    We started the topic with the letter 'u' (umbrella).  Throughout the week, as usual, we made various activities to help the children recognize the letter and learn its shape and sound.

      We always find time to play games and revise the other letters we already learned.

   

     During maths this week, besides our daily Abacus session we focused on the number 10.

       We made some experiments to learn about evaporation and condensation.  We poured water into two small identical containers and put them in the freezer.

           We took them out during the day to see the water in the process of freezing.  When the water was completely frozen, we took them out and brought them back to our classroom.

       Once out of the freezer, the ice starts to slowly melt.  We put one container on the windowsill in a sunny spot and left the other one in our classroom.  We found out that ice in the container we put in a sunny spot melted much faster.  Once melted, the water started to evaporate.  During the next few days we will be observing which one will be evaporating faster.

A much quicker way to observe evaporation:

      We set out two containers half filled with water and added food colouring to the water.  Then the children used an eye dropper to drop the coloured water onto a piece of paper towel. 

 The water evaporated and left the colour behind.
